Academics
Explorations students study college-preparatory subject areas organized in themed interdisciplinary clusters. Instead of attending classes with no relation to each other, student learning benefits with common themes that unite cluster classes through a more in depth, holistic view of the subjects.
In addition to the cluster courses, students receive instruction in math, Spanish, physical education, gardening/cooking, health education, and wilderness first-aid. We hold students to high academic standards emphasizing self-directed learning and independent study skills. They work closely together on projects and on a regular basis must organize materials, articulate their ideas, and respond to challenging questions.
Our programs are designed around three themes which are central to student development: curriculum, character and community. Each of these three themes is supported by the following belief statements:
Curriculum
- An experiential and interdisciplinary curriculum embracing current events and real world issues teaches both content and critical thinking.
- Music, arts and theater instruction provide students with tools for self-awareness, creative expression and a means for understanding diverse cultures.
- Students’ access to and success in college is enhanced by experiencing challenging academics, personal achievement, and meaningful presentation of knowledge.
Character
- Self-awareness is an important character trait developed through reflection on roles, relationships and experiencing positive adolescent experiences.
- An atmosphere of cooperation, respect, and individual responsibility helps students gain character strengths such as tolerance and understanding.
- Development of leadership and interpersonal communication skills allows young people to make a positive impact in the world.
Community
- Students learn best when learning takes place not only in the classroom but also through interaction with individuals and institutions in the larger community.

- Diverse and challenging experiences, including travel and service projects, broaden students’ worldviews and help them reach personal excellence.
- Understanding social justice and ecological literacy is essential for young people to become caring citizens in today’s world.
