100 Youth Voices!

Students at Explorations in their Research and Debate course have been examining issues of energy, transportation and the environment through research and debate. Now they have planned an event on November 17 from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. for young people to learn and express their voice on an proposal at the intersection of local and national discussion. Students from Whatcom and neighboring counties are invited to participate in “100 YOUTH VOICES” – a free youth forum and discussion on the proposed Gateway Pacific Terminal at Cherry Point.

The event is open to all Whatcom County youth ages 13-18 on November 17th from 5:30 – 9:30 p.m. at The Majestic, 1027 N. Forest Street in Bellingham. “100 Youth Voices” is sponsored by Explorations Academy, a nonprofit, independent high school in Whatcom County.

"100 Youth Voices" is an event that will stimulate dialogue; it's a non-partisan forum regarding transportation, economic, health, and environmental aspects of the shipping terminal proposal.  The “100 Youth Voices” event will be student-led and supported with food, discussion and a non-school format. The forum will conclude with an opportunity for teens to voice their opinion on video and to make statements for or against to be shared with elected officials and community leaders. After the forum, youth are invited to stay, socialize and dance to live music.

SSA's proposal to build a coal shipping facility called the Gateway Pacific Terminal (GPT) has precipitated a vigorous local debate around issues of economic development, energy policy, and environmental and health impacts. “100 Youth Voices” provides youth the opportunity to explore the information and communicate how they feel about it to community leaders.  The decision that our community leaders face today is representative of larger global energy issues and challenges playing themselves out on a local level.

The forum will wrap up with an opportunity for teens to voice their opinion on video and to make collective statements for or against the project to be shared with elected officials and community leaders. After the forum, youth are invited to stay, socialize and dance to live music. Food and beverages will be provided from 5:30-6 pm.  As a celebration to conclude the event, the band Endorfins will play from 8:45-9:30 p.m.
