2009 Summer Fun

“Alpine Art” ~ July 13-17
Adventure, campcraft and artistry for girls“
Backcountry travel, art, and self-awareness: In this week-long
summer course, high school girls will learn the essentials of camp
craft, Leave No Trace ethics and the subtle art of observation
while backpacking in the scenic North Cascades. We will consider
questions of beauty and desire, and how artwork can depict our
physical environment as well as the complex world inside each of us.

“Fire and Philosophy” ~ July 20- 24*
Paleolithic craft meets postmodern concepts
Students will develop primitive skills: fire and shelter
building, the identification and utilization of native plants
and orienteering coupled with the study of the great
American transcendentalists: Thoreau and Emerson.

“Rods, Reels, and Rivers” ~ July 27-August 1
The art and science of flyfishing Washington’s wilderness
This course introduces students to flyfishing and the myriad
components that make flyfishing not just a simple sport. Students
will learn the basics of casting and flytying, and also dive into the fishes’ world: macroinvertebrates, rivers, systems, and issues that challenge their survival. We will learn the basics, then travel to the Washington wilderness to experience backcountry fishing.
