February 14, 2020
Monday, February 24 – First Day of Spring Term
February 26-28 – Spring Orientation
Saturday, February 29 – Casino Night Fundraiser
Our cluster classes have all been hard at work to write and rehearse original presentations about their learning this term. Please join us for our Winter Term End Celebration tonight, from 6-8 pm.
As before, we are hosting a soup and bread potluck for all guests before the festivities start. Soup and social time start at 5:30. Please check the signup linked below to see which soup, bread, or clean up needs you can help fill. We look forward to seeing you there!
Curriculum Overview and Cluster Preference Forms
Our course descriptions for both middle and high school classes have been released, along with the Cluster Preference Form that students need to fill out to register their choices for the term. Our class sizes are limited, and preference does not guarantee first choice. However, thoughtfully completing the preference form and submitting it on time can help secure your spot. Please return your completed form–electronically or on paper–to Tania as soon as possible today, Friday February 14. Parents, contact your student’s advisor if you have any questions about course content or expectations.
Mark Your Calendars For Casino Night
Explorations Academy is excited to host Casino Night at the Lairmont Manor on February 29th. Please join us for a fun-filled evening with all your favorite casino games professionally staffed with experts more than happy to teach you the best strategies. Everyone from beginners to seasoned poker players will find their favorite games, along with some of Bellingham’s most interesting characters. Best of all, all proceeds go to Explorations Academy, the Pacific Northwest’s premier experiential secondary program. Explorations Academy will be celebrating 25 years of never turning away a student for financial reasons this spring, and your support will allow us to do so for another 25 years to come. Get dressed up, enjoy fabulous food and drink, and make a difference in the lives of tomorrow’s change agents. We cannot wait to see you there.
Farewell to Carson
Today is the last day that we get to enjoy the talents and company of our fabulous intern, Carson. He brought good humor, passionate teaching, and savvy outdoor expertise to our school community. He is off to Alaska to put his recent Master’s in Environmental Education to use training the next generation of wilderness guides. We’ll miss you, Carson! Thank you for everything.
Spring Orientation at Quaker Cove
We start spring term on Monday, February 24. To kick off the new term, we take all students on a 3-day orientation to introduce them to their new clusters, complete some service work, and enjoy quality time together before the term gets going. As before, we spend spring orientation at Quaker Cove on Fidalgo Island. This rustic retreat has been hosting us for a decade or more, and features plenty of trails across the property, fast beach access, and a large communal hall where we can all dine together. Students will be away for 2 nights, returning before the end of the school day on Friday, February 28. Students should pack from the front country packing list. Quaker Cove has cabins with bunks, so students will not need sleeping pads or ground tarps. Please also note that electronic devices, including phones, are not allowed on this trip.
