Building With Old and New Tools
High school students in design technology are building models of flying machines using two different technologies: one old and one new. Sketchup is a web-based computer-assisted design (CAD) program used by construction, design, and engineering professionals. Through 3-D modeling, students can visualize how modern aircraft are built and implement their own solutions to design problems.
Students are also constructing a scale model of the Wright Brothers Flyer, which achieved the world’s first powered, controlled, manned flight. When finished, the model will have a wingspan of 5 feet and feature a miniature Wilbur Wright in the pilot’s seat. Fun fact: that world-famous flight kept the Flyer in the air for 120 feet, which means the whole flight could fit inside the cargo bay of a modern Lockheed C-5 Galaxy.
