High School Backpacking
All high school students need to bring their backpacks with all items on the gear list to school tomorrow 5/4 for gear check. Students who will be riding the EA bus to the trailhead are encouraged to leave their bags at school overnight.
For families who prefer to minimize carpool exposure or who are coming from the south, students may be dropped off at the Blanchard Upper Parking Lot at 9:30am on Wednesday 5/5. Please let us know if this is your plan. Otherwise we plan to transport students to the trailhead from Explorations. Students need to arrive at the school before 9:00 so we can depart promptly at 9:30.
Explorations Academy will handle transportation from the trailhead to the school unless parents have a specific need to pick children up from the trailhead. Students will be back at Explorations, ready for a 4:00 pm pickup on Friday, May 7th.
Please review the Backcountry Covid policy before departing for this trip.
Washington State History Trip to Sucia Island
We are busy finalizing details for the high school trip to Sucia Island (May 17-21). This is the one camping trip that we do regularly where students are allowed to sleep in tents. In the event that your family has a small tent that you would like to lend to the school or assign to a specific student, please let us know in advance so we can plan accordingly. Tents need to be able to attach to or be packed inside of a student’s backpacking backpack. Students are only allowed to share tents with prior written permission from the parents of all students who would like to share that tent (limited to three students per tent).
We will bring tarps or tents for students who are unable to bring their own. We anticipate returning to the mainland in the evening on May 21st past normal school hours. The exact time will be listed in next week’s family bulletin.
Students who are not going to be able to attend need to let us know no later than Monday, May 10th so alternative arrangements can be made. Please contact Marley to set up that independent contract.
In the event that any student has specific food restrictions, please let Elizabeth know.
Middle School Backpacking
All middle school students will need to bring their backpacks fully loaded for gear check on Monday, May 10th. We anticipate the logistics to look similar to the high school section listed above (with the exception of a 2:00pm pickup for those without tutoring sessions planned); however, we will take the experience of the high school group into consideration before finalizing that plan in next week’s bulletin.
While we hope to see everyone participate at our Spring Auction, we recognize that some people prefer to donate directly to the school rather than bidding on more stuff. The next two days are a great opportunity to do so as Explorations Academy joins the many other non-profits in Washington in Giving Big. While it is fun to watch the meter on the official Give Big! site, the truth is that donating by credit card actually involves lower fees when contributing directly to the school’s site (https://explorationsacademy.
EA Work Party
We still need a lot more parents to help this weekend!
Calling all families to help prepare the school for full time in-person instruction. We need to convert the library into a classroom to adhere to Covid protocols. We will need to move couches, tables, chairs, etc. into the basement and then move and clean desks for the new classroom.
Saturday, May 8th from 10 to 12.
More hands, lighter the work.
Please email Elizabeth if you can help. This can be counted towards your required parent hours.
