Friday, February 8 – Winterim Term End Celebration
Friday, February 8 – Last Day of Winterim
Wednesday, February 20 – First Day of Spring Term
February 20-February 22 – Spring Term Orientation
Monday’s all-school hike down the Rock Trail was a fun and successful outing for students. The trail is relatively new and connects Cyrus Gates with the Lost Lake trail system. Along the way, hikers are treated to a close-up view of vast bluffs made out of distinctive Chuckanut sandstone. This sandstone erodes into unusual honeycomb patterns, and Rock Trail’s bluffs feature several pockets in otherwise smooth rock. The top pocket here, though it appears small, is large enough inside for three students to take a comfortable rest.
Heart & Sole launches inaugural session this winter!
Heart & Sole creates a positive, structured space for middle school girls to learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy, strengthen connections, and develop life skills that will help them as they move through adolescence and beyond. The trained coaches meet with the girls twice a week for 90 minutes. This structured, girl-centered curriculum, written by a team of educators, is based on current research regarding physical activity, positive youth development, and the best practice for working with middle school students. The program promotes physical activity (running and strength conditioning) as well as team building, setting boundaries, regulating emotions, taking a stand, making connections, solving problems, and developing empathy.
Meetings will be held at Whatcom Middle School but adolescent girls from all over Whatcom County are invited to participate. Meetings are Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:45 to 5:15. We have a sliding scale fee structure. Please contact Sharon or Jen for more information.
Winterim Term End
Please join us for our winter term end event! We will celebrate the work of students in both flight clusters, and welcome Vietnam travelers home. This will be a shorter event than our last term end but will feature the same clever skits, informative presentations, and meaningful pin ceremony. If you wish, please bring a potluck dish to share labeled with any common allergens. The event starts at 6:00 pm and will wrap-up around 7:30.
High School Students Out Early Next Week
To prepare for next Friday’s term end event we’re aligning the schedules of middle and high school students. This means that all students will be released at 3:30 next week. Staff will still be in the building until our regular release at 4:00. If this causes any problems with transportation, please contact Tania so we can arrange accommodations.
This term has provided an intense and fast-paced curriculum for all students, whether they traveled the far reaches of Vietnam or stayed right here in Bellingham. To rest up for the spring term, we’ll close for a week and give students a short break. Our midwinter break runs from Monday, February 11 through Tuesday, Feb 19. We’ll kick off our spring clusters with a three-day orientation at Quaker Cove, leaving Wednesday, Feb 20. Classes will start the following Monday. We’re all excited for our spring term cluster themes, and will provide more information on registration options in the coming week.
