Bacchus Reflects on the Power of Community Support
Those who know me well know that the odds are slim to none that I say something positive about the federal government, regardless of who is in charge. That being said, I must admit that I am fascinated by the idea of Universal Basic Income, and I am intrigued as to how the federal government’s first steps into the realm of UBI will go. I know that I heard many EA students discuss the merits of a Freedom Dividend, and I may have joined in on a few of those conversations. Now is the opportunity to show what injecting cash into society in a period of need can do.
Yesterday, stimulus funds hit my bank account. For most of my life, that $1,200 would be enough to take care of about a quarter of my annual living expenses. Not too long ago, those funds would have meant that I did not have to visit the food bank or that I was not trying to do my student teaching at Sehome High while camped out on Sehome Hill attempting to scrounge enough money for first and last month’s rent. I know the difference that those funds can have when money is tight, and I am so glad that families that need them are receiving them during this period of unprecedented economic upheaval. I recognize that I am exceptionally fortunate to not be in that place at this moment, and I feel blessed to be in a position where I might be able to make a small difference.
In this season of social distancing, it is more important than ever that those who are able act to support one another. Thus I will be donating a portion of those funds to a few causes that are close to me. First of all, I will be giving to Explorations Academy (I’m only a little biased in this regard). I think we all can appreciate the importance of getting kids out into the world as we are all dreaming about what we will do when it is safe to travel freely once again. I think we can also all agree on the fact that critical thinking and media literacy skills will be more needed than ever as we emerge from this crisis. And while I would never have chosen to turn EA into an online school, I am honored to work with such incredible teachers who have done amazing work offering instruction that honors the spirit of Explorations Academy in a new environment. I remain committed to significantly raising their salaries even in a time of particularly unknowable futures, and I would like to ask for your help in making that possible. While we cannot gather for EA’s 25th anniversary as we thought we would when we planned our Spring Gala, I hope that those who are able will join me in raising the funds we were planning on raising at that event to ensure that EA can continue to thrive in the years ahead.
