Norman Rockwell noticed that most of the worlds’ religions have some form of The Golden Rule. Using photographs he had taken during his 1955 world trip, Rockwell recreated the native costumes and accessories in the group of people of varying religions, races, and ethnicities that make up the backdrop behind the inscription “Do Unto Other as You Would Have Them Do Unto You.”

“I am Robert Bower, 77 year old retired craftsperson and an elder of indigenous ancestry. I managed a craft center for the U.S. Navy for nineteen years and was a middle and high school Industrial Arts teacher. I also worked as a tool design draftsman for Boeing. Currently, I play with rocks, primarily knapping, and lapidary. I’ve been knapping for about 20 years, specializing in stone knives and arrowheads. I collect most of my own stone from the Obsidian fields in southwest Oregon knapping it by hand and most of the wood for the handles I find on the beaches here on Whidbey Island.”
